It’s a perfect filler game since rounds are finished in minutes and the entire game in 10 minutes. Love Letter is a card game introduced in May 2012 and designed by Seiji Kanai.[1] It was produced in the United States by Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) until 2018, when Love Letter was acquired by Z-Man Games (a subsidiary of Asmodee).[2]
Premise[edit]
Each player aims to deliver a love letter to the princess with the assistance of collaborators.
Playing method[edit]
2–4 people play. First, one card is dealt to each person, and one is discarded face-down from the round (so the process of elimination cannot be used to prove which cards are left) and the rest are deposited face-down into a deck in the middle. During each player's turn, they draw one card from the deck and play either that card, or the card they already had. After processing the effect described on the discarded card, the next player gets a turn. This is repeated until either the deck disappears, in which case the player holding the highest card wins the round (if tied, then the player with the highest total of cards in their discard pile), or until all players but one are eliminated, in which case the remaining player wins the round. The deck (including the discarded card) is shuffled, and play begins again. Once a player wins the game, that player receives a token of affection. The game ends when one player has obtained a predetermined number of tokens of affection (normally anywhere from four to seven).

Premium Edition[edit]
A premium edition of Love Letter has been sold that includes a 5-8 player variant. This variant uses all of the cards above, as well as the following.

| Sycophant | 4 | 2 | Player chooses a player. During the next turn, players must target that player with card effects if able. |
| Count | 5 | 2 | Does nothing when played. If in a player's discard pile at the end of a round, that player receives a +1 bonus to their card's value at the end of the round. |
| Constable | 6 | 1 | Does nothing when played. If in a player's discard pile and that player is eliminated from the round via a card effect, then that player gets a token of affection. |
| Dowager Queen | 7 | 1 | The player will privately compare hands with another player, and the player with the higher-valued card is eliminated from the round. |
| Bishop | 9 | 1 | The player must guess the number of a card in another player's hand. If guessed correctly, then the player who played the Bishop gets a token of affection and the player that was designated may optionally choose to replace their card with a new one. Despite this card's value of '9' and the Princess's value of '8', the Bishop loses to the Princess at the end of the round. |
Second Edition[edit]
A 2nd edition of Love Letter was released in 2019 with new artwork, as well as having five cards added to support play by 2-6 players. This version uses all the cards in the basic version but changes the strength value of the King to 7, the Countess to 8 and the Princess to 9. It also adds one additional Guard card and the following new cards:

This version can also be played in accordance with the original version by removing the five additional cards, though this only supports for 2-4 players.
An April Fools print-and-play version (named as Love Letter: Sender) is also available, which combines the game's theme with a parody of online dating.

Due to the game's successful sales, Alderac has subsequently produced different variants of Love Letter, each of which uses a similar or identical set of rules:
- Love Letter (2012) – the first edition of the game
- Love Letter: Legend of the Five Rings Edition (2014) – a Legend of the Five Rings-themed version of the game, with new art but identical rules to the original game
- Love Letter: Wedding Edition (2014) – a wedding-themed version of the game with corresponding art, only available directly from the publisher, and only to those celebrating their own or someone else's wedding
- Big Love Letter (2014) – a 'postcard expansion' explaining how to use 2 sets of the base game to play with up to 8 players, released in German by Pegasus Spiele
- Munchkin Loot Letter[5] (2014) – a Munchkin-themed version that is otherwise identical to the base game (though it includes one new card for Munchkin itself)
- Letters to Santa (2014) – a Christmas-themed edition of the game featuring characters such as Santa Claus, snowmen, and reindeer
- Love Letter: The Hobbit – The Battle of the Five Armies[5] (2015) – a 17-card tie-in version for the 2014 film The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies with 2 notable changes from the base game: it adds a 'The One Ring' card with a special value, and includes two different versions of the Baron card (one causes the player with the higher-value hand to be out of the round instead)
- Love Letter: Batman[5] (2015) – a Batman-themed version with a single added rule: a player who plays Batman (card value 1) and correctly guesses another player's card immediately earns a token
- Land of the Lustrous Card Game: 'Love Letter' (宝石の国カードゲーム 「ラブレター」) (2015) – a Japanese variant themed after Land of the Lustrous (Hōseki no Kuni) with some rules changes and new cards, included with the special edition release of volume 4 of the manga
- Adventure Time: Love Letter[6] (2015) – an Adventure Time-themed version with 2 new rules: an additional possible win condition, and the ability to receive an additional token for winning the round with a 'Companion' card in one's hand
- Star Wars: Secret Invasion (Russian: Звёздные войны: Тайное вторжение)[5] (2015) – a 17-card Star Wars-themed Russian version that grants each character card a special ability, and once again includes two different versions of the Baron
- Love Letter Premium (2016) – an enhanced version for up to 8 players with an additional set of cards
- Archer: Once You Go Blackmail...[5] (2016) – an Archer-themed version of the game
- Harap Alb Continues: A Love Letter Game (Romanian: Harap Alb Continuă...: un joc Love Letter)[7] (2016) – a Romanian version based on the character of Harap Alb, released by publisher cutia.ro
- Osomatsu-san Love Letter Board Game (おそ松さんラブレターボードゲーム) (2016) – a Mr. Osomatsu-themed variant for up to 6 players published in Japanese by Arclight, with a few notable rules modifications: each player chooses to play as 1 of the 6 Matsuno siblings, and there are 6 cards with a value of 1 that are each named after a Matsuno sibling; if the card in a player's hand matches the player's character, the card is treated as having a value of 9 instead
- Love Letter: Erweiterung (2017) – an expansion that adds 10 new characters, released in German by Pegasus Spiele
- Lovecraft Letter[8] (2017) – a version based on Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos that introduces new versions of the cards based on 'insanity' powers

Unfortunately, she has locked herself in the Palace, and you must rely on others to bring your romantic letters to her. Will yours reach her first? Love Letter is a game of risk, deduction, and luck for 2 to 4 players. Your goal is to get your love letter into Princess Annette’s hands while deflecting the letters from competing suitors. From a deck with only sixteen cards, each player starts with only one card in hand; one card is removed from play. On a turn, you draw one card, and play one card, trying to expose others and knock them from the game. Powerful cards lead to early gains but make you a target. Rely on weaker cards for too long, however, and your letter may be tossed in the fire.” (Alderac Entertainment Group)

The Gist:
Love Letter packs a big punch in a little package. It has a great storyline, is quick to teach and easy to learn, is incredibly portable, and is friendly on your wallet.Essentially, each player is a suitor who wants their love letter to get to the princess. Suitors are quickly eliminated one by one by following the directions on the card. The player left in the round with the highest value card wins the round and receives one token of affection (a red cube).
Board Game Geek Love Letter
When your turn begins, you have only one card in your hand. You then draw a card and play a card face up. You and the other players must follow the directions on the card. For example, if you play a “guard” card, you can try to guess what card an opponent has. If you guess correctly, they are out of the round. When you are eliminated, you must discard your hand face up.
While there is always a bit of luck in card games, this one practices great skills of deduction. This is because all cards are discarded face up. Through the process of elimination and by seeing what your opponents are playing, you are more likely to predict their next move and find a way to eliminate them.
Skilled gamers, bluffers, and non-gaming individuals can all enjoy this game. Non-competitive people can easily play this on autopilot while making small talk or waiting for a movie/show to start. People who prefer deductive games or are more competitive will likely pay more attention and be more successful. Either way, this is a great way to pass the time and keep your friends and family members occupied for a bit.
